Sieniä
Sieniä is the Finnish word for fungi. This broad category encompasses a vast kingdom of organisms that are neither plants nor animals, characterized by their unique methods of obtaining nutrients. Unlike plants, fungi do not produce their own food through photosynthesis. Instead, they are heterotrophic, meaning they absorb nutrients from their environment. This can be achieved in several ways: saprophytic fungi decompose dead organic matter, providing essential recycling in ecosystems; parasitic fungi derive nutrients from living hosts, sometimes causing disease; and symbiotic fungi form mutually beneficial relationships with other organisms, such as mycorrhizal fungi with plant roots or lichens with algae.
