Siemensprosessiin

Siemensprosessiin refers to the Siemens process, a method for producing sulfuric acid. This industrial process was developed by Werner von Siemens in the mid-19th century. It is a crucial part of sulfuric acid manufacturing, a chemical widely used in fertilizers, batteries, refining, and many other industrial applications.

The Siemens process begins with the combustion of sulfur or sulfur-containing materials to produce sulfur dioxide (SO2). This sulfur dioxide gas is then mixed with air and passed through a catalytic converter. In this converter, a vanadium pentoxide catalyst facilitates the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide (SO3). This step is exothermic, meaning it releases heat. The temperature control is vital for the efficiency of the catalyst.

The sulfur trioxide produced is then absorbed in concentrated sulfuric acid to form oleum, also known as fuming sulfuric acid. Oleum is essentially sulfuric acid with dissolved sulfur trioxide. This oleum is then diluted with water to produce sulfuric acid of the desired concentration. The entire process is a continuous one, designed for high efficiency and yield in sulfuric acid production. While other methods exist, the Siemens process, or variations thereof, remains a significant contributor to global sulfuric acid output due to its established reliability and scalability.
