Siegessäule

The Siegessäule, or Victory Column, is a monument in Berlin, Germany. Located in the Tiergarten park, it commemorates Prussian victories, particularly in the Second Schleswig War of 1864. The column's design was conceived by architect Heinrich Strack, with sculptures by various artists.

The monument stands at 67 meters (220 feet) tall and is topped by a gilded bronze statue of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. This statue, affectionately nicknamed "Goldelse" by Berliners, is a prominent landmark. The column itself is made of granite and features four sandstone reliefs depicting scenes from the wars.

Visitors can climb to the top of the Siegessäule via a spiral staircase to enjoy panoramic views of Berlin. The base of the monument is surrounded by a circular plaza, which is a popular gathering spot. Originally erected near the Reichstag building, it was moved to its current location in 1938-1939 as part of Nazi urban planning. The Siegessäule survived World War II largely intact, although it was later restored. It remains a significant historical and tourist attraction in the German capital.
