Sidosanarajalla

Sidosanarajalla is a linguistic term used in Finnish grammar to describe the boundary position around a linking word (sidosana) in sentence structure. The term combines sidosana and rajalla (on the boundary) and is used to discuss how conjunctions connect clauses and how punctuation and prosody relate to these connections. It is especially relevant in the analysis of coordinating conjunctions such as ja and mutta, and their role in linking clauses.

In practice, sidosanarajalla refers to the point at which a conjunction is attached to either the preceding clause or the following clause, affecting syntactic grouping and punctuation. Finnish often places a comma before a conjunction like ja or mutta in coordinated clauses, creating a clear boundary; in other contexts, the boundary may be placed differently, such as in tightly integrated clause sequences.
