Short timescale is a term used in science to describe processes that occur over time intervals that are small relative to the characteristic timescales of a system under study. What counts as short is context dependent; for atomic and molecular dynamics, it typically means femtoseconds (10^-15 s) to picoseconds (10^-12 s), while electronic or photochemical processes may be analyzed on attosecond (10^-18 s) scales. In condensed matter and materials science, short timescales often refer to sub-picosecond dynamics of electrons, spins, and lattice vibrations.

Researchers access short timescales with ultrafast techniques such as pump-probe spectroscopy, streak cameras, time-resolved photoemission, and high-harmonic generation, enabling measurements with temporal resolution down to tens of attoseconds in specialized setups. The concept is central to studies of transient states, non-equilibrium dynamics, and photoinduced processes, where the sequence of events unfolds before slower relaxation or diffusion dominates.

Interpreting measurements on short timescales requires modeling the instrument response and the finite duration of the probing pulse, since observed signals are typically a convolution of the system’s response with the probe. Short-timescale dynamics can reveal the initial steps of chemical reactions, charge and energy transfer, coherence phenomena, and rapid phase or structural changes that precede longer-term evolution. The term is relative and qualitative, used across disciplines with scale definitions tailored to the phenomena of interest.
