Shonin

Shonin, written in kanji as 商人 and pronounced shōnin in Japanese, is a term that means merchant or trader. It refers to a person who engages in commerce, selling goods or services.

Etymology and scope: The word combines 商 (commerce) with 人 (person). Historically, shonin referred to members of a merchant class in Japan, particularly in urban centers where trade and markets flourished. Merchants were often organized into informal networks or associations to facilitate buying, selling, and credit.

Historical context: In feudal Japan, merchants occupied a distinct social category different from samurai, farmers, and artisans. Although not part of the hereditary hierarchy, they accumulated wealth through local and distant trade, contributing to the growth of cities and urban culture.
