Shipwrecked

Shipwrecked is a term used to describe a vessel that has been destroyed, broken apart, or driven ashore as a result of a maritime accident, or a person who has survived such an event after being stranded at sea. The term functions as an adjective (a shipwrecked vessel) or a past participle (to shipwreck). It can also describe the condition of being rescued or recovered after a wreck.

Causes of shipwrecks include severe weather, navigational errors, mechanical failure, collisions with other vessels, and environmental hazards such as reefs, ice, or sandbanks. The consequences range from the total loss of the vessel and its cargo to personal peril for crew and passengers, necessitating rescue operations. Wrecks may also pose environmental risks, including fuel leaks or hazardous materials. Salvage efforts seek to recover ships, cargo, or valuable artifacts and are governed by maritime law and international conventions.

Wreck sites are of interest to maritime archaeologists and historians because they preserve artifacts and records of past technology, trade, and daily life. International and national laws protect underwater cultural heritage, particularly for ancient or historically significant wrecks. The UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and various national statutes regulate salvage rights, excavation, and artifact ownership.

In culture, shipwrecks commonly appear as plot devices illustrating survival, resilience, and moral decisions. Notable historic shipwrecks studied by researchers and divers include the RMS Titanic and the Mary Rose, among others that offer insights into different eras of seafaring.
