Shinkyo
Shinkyo is a picturesque red bridge located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Its name translates to "sacred bridge" and it is considered one of the three most beautiful bridges in Japan. Historically, the bridge was part of the pathway to Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. The current bridge was constructed in 1636, though the site has been spanned by bridges for over a millennium. The vermillion color is striking against the surrounding natural beauty of the Daiya River and the lush greenery. Access to walk across the bridge is generally restricted to certain periods and may involve a fee, as it is a sacred site. However, its iconic appearance can be admired from viewpoints along the riverbanks. Shinkyo is a prominent symbol of Nikko and attracts many visitors who come to appreciate its cultural significance and scenic charm. The bridge is also associated with legends and folklore, adding to its mystique.
