Shauny

Shauny is a small commune in the Ardennes department of the Grand Est region in northeastern France. It lies approximately 25 kilometres north of Charleville‑Mézières, within the valley of the Meuse river. The total area covers around 7.5 square kilometres and the elevation ranges between 120 and 230 metres above sea level.

The local population has remained relatively stable over the past decades, with the latest census reporting around 1,200 residents. Historically, the village is first recorded in the 12th century under the name “Sanu” and served as a minor agricultural hub. A notable event in the 20th century was the Battle of Shauny during the First World War, in which Allied and German forces fought over control of the surrounding hills; the war memorial in the village commemorates the local soldiers who died.

The economy of Shauny is based mainly on mixed farming, particularly cereal cultivation and dairy production, supported by a small number of artisan workshops. In recent years, the commune has developed eco‑tourism, offering guided walks through the surrounding forest and access to a series of limestone karst caves.

Shauny is also known for its annual cultural festival held every July, where regional music, traditional dance, and local gastronomy are showcased. The main community building is the 18th‑century parish church of Saint‑Étienne, noted for its Baroque interior and a set of hand‑carved sculptures.
