Shamwari

Shamwari is a well-known private game reserve located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Established in 1986, it spans over 25,000 hectares and is renowned for its conservation efforts and luxury safari experiences. The name "Shamwari" means "my friend" or "my companion" in the Shona language, reflecting its ethos of coexistence and shared commitment to wildlife.

The reserve is home to the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo – as well as a diverse array of other wildlife, including cheetahs, hippos, giraffes, and numerous bird species. Shamwari is particularly recognized for its role in the conservation of endangered species, notably its rhino conservation program which addresses poaching and breeding.

Shamwari comprises several luxury lodges, each offering a unique safari experience with guided game drives, bush walks, and opportunities to learn about the local ecosystem and conservation initiatives. The reserve actively engages in anti-poaching patrols and rehabilitation of injured or orphaned animals through its wildlife rehabilitation center.
