Most shampoos are water-based emulsions that contain surfactants to lift oils and debris. Common surfactants include anionic ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). Etymology traces the word shampoo to the Hindi chāmpo, meaning to massage or knead. In English, shampoos are widely available in many formulations to suit diverse hair and scalp needs. Shampoots, while recognizable as a term, are not the standard plural.
