Shaftandcar

Shaftandcar is a term that can refer to several related concepts within mining and mechanical engineering. At its most basic, it describes a system involving a shaft, which is a vertical or inclined excavation, and a car, which is a conveyance designed to travel within that shaft. This system is fundamental to the extraction of minerals and resources from underground mines.

In mining, shaft-and-car systems are used to transport ore, waste rock, personnel, and equipment between the surface and various levels of the mine. The "car" in this context is typically a skip or a cage, often pulled by a hoist system. The shaft itself provides the necessary vertical access. The design and operation of these systems are critical for mine efficiency and safety.
