Shadowsand

Shadowsand is a term used primarily in fantasy literature and speculative discussions of geology to describe a granular material that purportedly absorbs light. In these contexts, shadowsand is defined by its extremely low reflectivity and its tendency to darken surrounding light through shadow-accumulating interactions. The name derives from its apparent affinity for shadow and its sand-like grain size.

Grains are typically described as fine to moderately coarse, irregular, and opaque, ranging in color from smoky gray to near-black. The individual grains are often said to have a dull, matte surface and a density similar to common silica sand. Some depictions attribute subtle photochemical or magnetic properties, suggesting that prolonged exposure to darkness enhances its shadowing effect.

According to fiction, shadowsand forms in environments where light is scarce, such as deep caverns or shadowed deserts, either through natural processes that bind darkness to particles or through deliberate introduction of shadow-absorbing agents. In some speculative theories, it can be produced synthetically by treating ordinary sand with carbon-rich compounds under controlled low-light conditions.

In narrative contexts, shadowsand is used as a pigment for inks and paints that appear to absorb light, in crafting wards or runes that require concealment, or as a material in artifacts that manipulate light and shadow. It is sometimes referenced as a component in magical or alchemical recipes.
