Sfax

Sfax is a city in eastern Tunisia, situated on the Mediterranean coast and serving as the capital of Sfax Governorate. It is the second-largest city in the country by population and acts as a major commercial port and industrial hub for the central eastern region. The city lies roughly 270 kilometers southeast of Tunis.

The historic core is the medina, founded in the medieval period and surrounded by defensive walls. It preserves narrow streets, mosques, and traditional markets, while modern districts and industrial zones extend beyond the old town. The medina and its environs reflect a long trade heritage and coastal urban culture.

Economy and infrastructure are centered on the port, which supports fishing, cargo, and regional trade. Sfax hosts a large industrial zone with activities in food processing, textiles, and other manufacturing. The surrounding area contributes to agriculture, including olive oil and citrus production, reinforcing the city’s role as an economic link between inland Tunisia and the coast.

Education and culture: The University of Sfax, established in 1996, is a major center of higher education with faculties across science, engineering, medicine, and humanities. Cultural life focuses on the medina, local markets, and regional festivals, reflecting a blend of historic traditions and modern urban living.

Climate and transport: Sfax has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The city is served by Sfax–Thyna International Airport and a railway line linking it with Tunis and southern Tunisia; its port handles international maritime traffic.
