Sethanon

Sethanon is a legendary subterranean city described in several obscure medieval chronicles and later folklore collections. The name is thought to derive from the proto‑Germanic root seth, meaning “dwelling”, combined with the suffix ‑anon used in local toponymy. Because no contemporaneous archaeological evidence has been recovered, the city remains a subject of debate among historians and folklorists.

According to the earliest accounts, Sethanon lies beneath the plateau of Gallowen in what is now the southeastern territories of the ancient Kingdom of Eldar. The city is said to have been carved into a vast limestone basin, with corridors and chambers arranged in a radial pattern. Some texts describe natural skylights at intervals that permit moonlight to illuminate the interior, a feature that may have contributed to the city's mystique.

The founding legend attributes the city’s construction to the sorcerer‑king Vardulf, who supposedly used forbidden geometries to harness subterranean energies. Scholars suggest that the story may have been a parable warning against excessive ambition. The city is also associated with the “Cleansing of the Vale”, a hastened evacuation recorded in a 14th‑century chronicle after a massive cave-in.

Modern scholarship treats Sethanon as a composite invention drawn from multiple folk narratives rather than a single historic site. No reliable excavation sites have been identified, and the physical remains cited in medieval texts appear to be metaphorical or symbolic. Consequently, contemporary researchers refer to Sethanon primarily in studies of mythic urbanism and the transmission of textual folklore in northern Europe.
