Sessiont refers to a period of time during which a user interacts with a system or application. This interaction is typically characterized by a series of related requests and responses between the user's client (like a web browser) and the server hosting the system. The concept of a session is crucial for maintaining state and context for a user across multiple requests. Without sessions, each request would be treated as an independent event, making it impossible to remember previous actions or preferences.

When a user initiates an interaction, a unique session identifier is often generated and assigned to them. This identifier is then sent back to the client, usually in the form of a cookie. On subsequent requests, the client sends this identifier back to the server, allowing the server to associate the incoming request with the correct ongoing session. This enables the system to store and retrieve session-specific data, such as user login status, shopping cart contents, or form data.

Session management involves creating, maintaining, and eventually terminating these sessions. Servers typically have mechanisms to set session timeouts, automatically ending a session after a period of inactivity. This is important for security and resource management, preventing stale or abandoned sessions from consuming server resources indefinitely.
