Sessionems

Sessionems are a conceptual unit used in certain analytics and user-journey research to capture tightly bound activity within a user session. The term is a portmanteau of session and event marker, used to indicate a defined block of interaction that researchers treat as a single cohesive unit for measurement and analysis. Sessionems are intended to bridge granular event data and higher-level session reports by isolating micro-patterns within a session.

Definition and structure: A sessionem records an instance of activity occurring within a session boundary, defined by a timeout or a manual boundary set by the data collector. Each sessionem has an identifier, a session_id, a start_time, an end_time, an event_type, and a minimal set of metadata such as device, location, and context. The collection produces a sequence of sessionems per session, enabling micro-journey analyses like task completion times and interaction bottlenecks.

Relation to other metrics: Unlike individual events, which capture single actions, a sessionem groups actions that are tightly linked by intent. Unlike pageviews that focus on navigation between pages, sessionems emphasize cohesive action blocks, allowing researchers to study completed tasks rather than just page-level activity. Common practice is to configure a sessionem boundary using an inactivity timeout (for example, 15 minutes) or a user-initiated boundary.

Reception and use: Sessionems are used in experimental UX studies and by some analytics platforms to improve causal inference about user behavior within a session. Limitations include lack of universal standardization, potential ambiguity in boundary definitions, and the need for clear documentation to ensure comparability across projects.
