Sesquipedalianism is the habit or tendency to use long, often polysyllabic words, especially in written or formal speech. The term derives from the Latin sesquipedalis, meaning “a foot and a half long,” from sesqui- “one and a half” and ped- “foot.” In practice, sesquipedalian language is marked by unusually long words such as antidisestablishmentarianism, pancytopenia, or floccinaucinihilipilification, though the mere presence of long words does not by itself define the phenomenon.

Others intentionally exaggerate vocabulary for humor or satire.
