Sentraltendensmål

Sentraltendensmål is a statistical measure used to describe the central tendency or average of a set of data. It is a fundamental concept in statistics and is often used to summarize and interpret data. There are two primary measures of central tendency: mean and median.

The mean, often simply referred to as the average, is calculated by summing all the values in a dataset and then dividing by the number of values. It is sensitive to outliers and skewed data, as extreme values can significantly affect the mean. The formula for the mean (μ) of a dataset with n values is:

μ = (Σxi) / n

where Σxi represents the sum of all values and n is the number of values.

The median, on the other hand, is the middle value of a dataset when the values are arranged in ascending order. If the dataset has an odd number of values, the median is the middle number. If the dataset has an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle numbers. The median is less affected by outliers and skewed data, making it a more robust measure of central tendency in such cases.

Choosing between mean and median depends on the nature of the data and the research question. For symmetric data without outliers, the mean is typically used. For skewed data or data with outliers, the median is often more appropriate. Additionally, the mode, which is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset, can also be used as a measure of central tendency, especially for categorical data.
