Semiparametrisia

Semiparametrisia is a term used in statistics and econometrics to describe a class of modeling approaches that blends parametric and nonparametric elements. In this framework, part of the model is specified with a finite set of parameters (the parametric component), while another part is left flexible and modeled without a fixed functional form (the nonparametric component). The goal is to capture well-understood relationships with a compact parametric form while allowing complex patterns to be learned from the data.

A typical semiparametric model expresses an outcome as a combination of these components. For example, a response Y might be modeled as Y = Xβ + g(Z) + ε, where Xβ represents the parametric part with coefficients β, and g(Z) is an unknown smooth function of Z representing the nonparametric part. Other common structures include partial linear models and semiparametric hazards models, where the parametric part handles linear effects and the nonparametric part accommodates an unspecified baseline or nonlinear terms.

Estimation in semiparametria often uses techniques such as profile likelihood, backfitting, penalized splines, or kernel smoothing. Inference aims to achieve efficiency for the parametric parameters while providing reliable estimates for the nonparametric component. Key challenges include identifiability between parts, selection of smoothing or regularization parameters, and computational complexity.

Semiparametria offers flexibility and reduced model misspecification risk relative to fully parametric models, with broad applications in biostatistics, economics, and social sciences.
