Semiootikas

Semiootikas, Estonian for semiotics, is the interdisciplinary study of signs and sign systems and how meaning is produced, circulated and interpreted in social life, language, culture and media. It analyzes how signs function within cultures and how audiences read them.

The field has roots in 19th–20th century thought, notably in the work of Ferdinand de Saussure, who viewed signs as part of a linguistic system consisting of signifier and signified, defined by their relations to other signs; and Charles Peirce, who proposed a triadic model of the sign (representamen, object, interpretant) and distinguished icons, indexes, and symbols. Since then semiotics has diversified into approaches such as structuralist, post-structuralist, and branches like social semiotics and biosemiotics.

Key concepts include sign, signification, code, denotation, connotation, and the idea that meaning is produced in systems and through interpretation, not inherent in signs themselves. Texts and practices are viewed as semiotic events where actors negotiate meanings within cultural and contextual frameworks.

Semiootika is applied across disciplines: linguistics, literary and cultural studies, media and communication, marketing, design, and digital culture. It provides tools for analyzing how signs shape perception, ideologies, and social relations, from advertising and film to online discourse and user interfaces.
