Representamen is a term in Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of signs (semiotics) that refers to the form or vehicle of a sign—the element that represents something to an interpretant. It is the sign as a thing that stands for an object, not the object itself and not the interpretant, but the medium through which representation occurs.

In Peirce’s triadic model, a sign comprises three parts: the representamen, the object, and the interpretant. The representamen stands for the object to an interpretant, who is engaged in a process of interpretation. The object can be understood as either the immediate object (the object as conceived by the sign) or the dynamic object (the actual object in the world). The interpretant is the mental effect or understanding produced when someone interprets the sign, and it can itself become a sign in a continuing semiosis.

Representamina can take many forms, including words, images, sounds, or gestures. They are categorized in Peirce’s framework into icons, indexes, and symbols, depending on their relation to the object: icons resemble the object, indexes have a direct connection to it, and symbols depend on convention or habit. For example, a photograph is often icon-like, smoke can be an indexical sign of fire, and the word “dog” is a symbolic sign.

In modern usage, the term is sometimes superseded by “sign vehicle” or simply “sign,” but it remains a key concept in Peirce’s triadic account of semiosis, emphasizing that the sign’s meaning emerges through the interpretant’s mediation of the representamen and its object.
