Semievergreen

Semievergreen, or semi-evergreen, is a term used in botany and horticulture to describe a plant growth habit that lies between evergreen and deciduous. Semievergreen plants retain a substantial portion of their foliage for most of the year in mild climates, but may shed a portion of their leaves when exposed to cold temperatures, drought, or other stresses. In cooler or drier conditions, these plants can become partially deciduous, while in warmer areas they may appear fully evergreen.

Patterns and variability: The degree of leaf retention can vary by species, cultivar, age, and local conditions. Some plants may hold leaves on the upper branches or on mature wood while shedding from the lower canopy, and others may lose leaves only during harsh winters yet keep most foliage during mild years. In Mediterranean, coastal, and subtropical regions the semievergreen habit is common, while in cooler inland climates the same species may behave more decisively as deciduous.

Implications for cultivation: Semievergreen plants provide year-round structure but require seasonal care, particularly in drought or frost-prone areas. They often benefit from mulching, proper watering during dry periods, and selective pruning to maintain appearance and vigor. When planning landscapes, gardeners consider regional climate and microclimates to determine whether a species will express a semievergreen habit.
