Selkhets

Selkhets are a fictional ethnic group described in world-building and speculative fiction. They are traditionally forest-dwelling people of the northern highlands of the continent of Eldara, where dense pine forests, river valleys, and terraced fields shape settlement patterns. Communities are organized into kin groups and villages linked by footpaths and simple roads.

Language and writing: The Selkhet language belongs to a hypothetical Selkethic family. It is described as agglutinative with a subject–object–verb word order, vowel harmony, and a modest tone inventory. Historically it used a syllabic script; today most communication occurs in the national language, with ongoing transmission in homes and schools.

History and politics: The Selkhets are imagined as forming a loose confederation by the medieval period, maintaining autonomy through trade and alliances with neighboring states. In later centuries they faced external pressures and colonization, and achieved greater internal coherence while joining a regional federation in the modern era.

Culture and society: Social life centers on kinship, with clans and councils of elders playing key roles. The people are known for textile weaving and woodcarving, as well as seasonal harvest festivals, traditional music featuring long-neck lutes and frame drums, and a repertoire of oral storytelling. Religious practice emphasizes ancestors and natural spirits, interpreted through shamanic and local ceremonies.

Contemporary status: Population is imagined around tens to hundreds of thousands in Eldara's highlands. Many Selkhets live in urban and peri-urban settings, balancing modernization with cultural preservation. Language maintenance efforts, cultural associations, and diaspora networks support education and heritage.
