Selfcollected is an adjective describing data, samples, or information that is gathered by the subject themselves or by individuals rather than by external collectors such as researchers, clinicians, or laboratory staff. The term is used across several domains, including medicine, epidemiology, data collection, and citizen science, to denote items obtained through self-administration or self-report rather than through professional collection.

In medical contexts, self-collected samples refer to specimens obtained by individuals following instructions, such as self-collected vaginal or vaginal swabs for certain tests, or self-collected stool samples for colorectal cancer screening. Benefits include increased privacy, comfort, convenience, and the ability to reach populations with limited access to clinical services. Challenges involve potential variability in sample quality, the need for clear instructional materials, possible delays in processing, and the necessity for appropriate follow-up and confirmatory testing.

In data collection, self-collected data are supplied directly by participants—through diaries, surveys, mobile apps, or wearable sensors—without interviewer mediation. This approach can reduce interviewer bias and enable large-scale studies, but may produce inconsistent reporting, higher rates of missing data, and issues related to data reliability.

In environmental and community science, self-collected measurements or samples (for air, water, soil, or biodiversity observations) empower participants and expand geographic coverage, but require standardized protocols and rigorous quality-control measures to ensure comparability and validity.
