SelfFolding

Selffolding, often written self-folding, refers to the autonomous transformation of a flat or simple structure into a predetermined three-dimensional form through internal design and responsive materials, without manual folding after initiation. It is a cross-disciplinary concept at the intersection of origami-inspired engineering, materials science, and soft robotics.

The process relies on carefully engineered geometry and stimuli-responsive materials to drive folding. Crease patterns or hinges are designed so that, when activated, stresses cause the structure to buckle into its target shape. Materials used for selffolding include shape memory polymers, shape memory alloys, liquid crystal elastomers, and hydrogels, which respond to heat, light, electricity, magnetic fields, moisture, or pH changes. In some approaches, spatially varying properties or residual stresses are embedded in the flat precursor to steer the folding sequence.

Actuation methods vary with the application. Thermal and electrothermal heating are common for polymers and alloys; light-triggered or magnetic actuation enables remote control; pneumatic or hydraulic pressure can drive folds in soft, inflatable panels. Design challenges include achieving precise, repeatable shapes, controlling the folding sequence, and ensuring durability across cycles. Fabrication methods often involve 3D printing, laser cutting, or lithography combined with material programming.

Applications span deployable space structures, soft robots, micro- and nano-scale devices, biomedical scaffolds, and packaging. Selffolding continues to evolve with advances in programmable matter and 4D printing, aiming to expand how flat materials can autonomously assemble into functional 3D systems.
