SelfEmptying

Selfemptying, or kenosis, is the act or process of emptying oneself of ego, pride, or independent will, often in religious or spiritual contexts. The term derives from Greek kenosis meaning emptying and is used in Christian theology to describe aspects of the incarnation.

In Christian theology, kenosis is linked to Philippians 2:7, where Christ is described as emptying himself and taking the form of a servant. Interpretations vary: some see an essential kenosis in which Jesus relinquished certain divine attributes during the incarnation; others argue for a functional kenosis, where Jesus retained divine attributes but limited or did not use them in obedience to the Father. The concept has been the subject of ongoing doctrinal discussion regarding how divinity and humanity coexist in the person of Jesus.

In Christian spirituality, selfemptying is associated with humility, self-denial, and obedience to God, following Christ’s example. It is often viewed as a lifelong practice rather than a one-time event, emphasizing openness to God’s will and the shaping of character through humility and service.

In broader religious and philosophical contexts, the idea of letting go of fixed identities or excessive self-will appears in various forms. In secular or contemporary usage, selfemptying can describe practices aimed at reducing ego, attachments, or defensiveness to foster greater compassion, receptivity, or discernment.
