Selayar

Selayar refers to both the Selayar Islands, an archipelago off the southwest coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, and the associated regency, Kabupaten Kepulauan Selayar. The largest island in the group is Selayar Island, which hosts the regency seat, Benteng. The archipelago lies in the Flores Sea and comprises several inhabited and uninhabited islands with a generally hilly terrain, coastal plains, and tropical vegetation. The area supports coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems that contribute to its biodiversity.

Takabonerate National Park lies in the Selayar waters and features one of the world's largest coral atoll systems, making the archipelago an important site for marine science and diving tourism. The climate is tropical with a wet and dry season, and the coastal zones experience a variety of marine environments that support fisheries and coastal communities.

Administration and demographics: The regency is part of South Sulawesi Province, with Benteng as its administrative center. It is divided into multiple districts, each containing villages and small towns. The population is primarily composed of the Selayar people, who speak the Selayar language alongside Indonesian. Islam is the predominant religion, with communities maintaining traditional customs in coastal villages.

Economy and transportation: The economy centers on fishing and agriculture, with crops such as coconut, maize, and rice, complemented by growing tourism activity focused on marine and cultural attractions. Access to Selayar is mainly by sea, including regular ferries and passenger boats from Makassar and other Sulawesi ports, while air access is limited and typically serves regional routes.
