Sekundaarisäiliöiden, or secondary containment, refers to a barrier or system designed to prevent or mitigate the release of hazardous materials into the environment. This is typically achieved by providing an additional layer of protection around a primary storage container, such as a tank, pipe, or equipment. The purpose of secondary containment is to capture leaks, spills, or overflows that might escape from the primary containment.

Common forms of secondary containment include dikes, berms, double-walled tanks, and spill pallets. Dikes and berms are structural barriers built around storage areas to create a contained space. Double-walled tanks have an outer shell that encloses the inner tank, providing a space for any leakage to be contained. Spill pallets are absorbent or containment trays placed beneath smaller containers to catch drips and spills.

The implementation of secondary containment is often mandated by environmental regulations to protect soil, groundwater, and surface water from contamination. Industries that frequently handle hazardous substances, such as chemical manufacturing, petroleum storage, and hazardous waste management, are particularly reliant on effective secondary containment systems. Proper design, installation, and maintenance of these systems are crucial for their effectiveness. Regular inspections and prompt cleanup of any detected leaks are essential components of a comprehensive secondary containment strategy.
