Seksitauti, also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases, are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. This contact can include vaginal, anal, or oral sex. STIs can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Some common STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and HIV.

Many STIs do not show symptoms, which makes it difficult to know if you are infected. If symptoms do occur, they can vary depending on the specific infection. Some common symptoms include unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, sores or warts on the genitals, pain during urination, or itching in the genital area.

STIs can have serious long-term health consequences if left untreated. These can include infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and an increased risk of certain cancers. HIV, if untreated, can progress to AIDS.

Prevention is a key aspect of managing STIs. Practicing safe sex, which includes using condoms consistently and correctly, can significantly reduce the risk of transmission. Regular testing for STIs, especially for individuals who are sexually active with multiple partners or have symptoms, is also crucial for early detection and treatment. Many STIs are curable with antibiotics or antiviral medications. However, some viral STIs, like herpes and HIV, are manageable with treatment but not curable. Open communication with sexual partners about sexual health and history is also important.
