Sekretors

Sekretors is a term used in biology to describe molecules that are secreted from a cell. These secreted molecules can have a variety of functions, including signaling to other cells, acting as enzymes, or forming part of the extracellular matrix. The process of secretion is complex and involves multiple steps, including synthesis, processing, packaging, and release of the molecule from the cell.

Cells secrete molecules for numerous purposes. For example, endocrine cells secrete hormones into the bloodstream to regulate physiological processes throughout the body. Neurons release neurotransmitters at synapses to communicate with other neurons or target cells. Immune cells secrete cytokines to modulate the immune response. Many cells also secrete components of the extracellular matrix, which provides structural support and influences cell behavior.

The machinery for secretion is highly conserved across different cell types and organisms. Proteins destined for secretion are typically synthesized on ribosomes attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. They then enter the endoplasmic reticulum for folding and modification, and are transported to the Golgi apparatus for further processing and packaging into vesicles. These vesicles then move to the plasma membrane, where their contents are released into the extracellular space through a process called exocytosis. The specific mechanisms and signals that control exocytosis can vary depending on the type of molecule being secreted and the cell type.
