Seismiset

Seismiset is a Finnish-language term meaning seismic or relating to earthquakes. In Finnish scientific and engineering usage, it functions as an adjective to describe phenomena, measurements, and processes connected to seismic activity. The root seismi derives from Greek seismos, “earthquake,” and the term is used across geology, seismology, and applied engineering to form phrases such as seismiset ilmiöt (seismic phenomena) and seismiset mittaukset (seismic measurements).

Seismiset phenomena include the propagation of seismic waves (P-waves, S-waves, surface waves), ground shaking, fault rupture, liquefaction, and related effects such as landslides or tsunamis in oceanic earthquakes. Analysis relies on instruments like seismographs and seismometers that record arrival times and amplitudes of waves. This data supports locating the earthquake, estimating its origin time and magnitude, and assessing the distribution of shaking through concepts such as moment magnitude Mw, peak ground acceleration (PGA), and spectral acceleration.
