This configuration differs from parallel hybrid systems where both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor can independently or simultaneously drive the wheels. In a series hybrid, the engine operates within its most efficient speed range, independent of the vehicle's speed, as it only needs to generate electricity. This can lead to improved fuel efficiency, especially in city driving conditions where frequent stopping and starting occurs.

The electric motor provides instant torque, contributing to smooth acceleration and a quiet driving experience. The battery pack allows the vehicle to operate solely on electric power for certain distances, making it a form of plug-in hybrid if it can be recharged from an external source. The main advantage of a series hybrid system is its simplicity in terms of mechanical connection between the engine and the drivetrain, as only the electric motor is connected to the wheels. However, it can be less efficient at higher speeds compared to parallel hybrids because all power must pass through the electric motor and generator.
