Sedimentoodvoering is a term used in Dutch water management to refer to the deliberate planning and execution of sediment transport and deposition control in watercourses and related infrastructures. In practice, it encompasses activities aimed at maintaining channel capacity, reducing flood risk, protecting navigation routes, and safeguarding aquatic ecosystems by balancing sediment inputs and removals.

The concept rests on a sediment budget, which accounts for sources (upstream erosion, bank collapse), sinks (deposition in channels and reservoirs), and transfers through the system. Managers monitor sediment age, grain size, and contaminant load, and use modeling tools to predict how interventions will affect flow, sedimentation, and ecology over time.

Common measures in sedimentoodvoering include dredging to remove excess sediment from channels, sediment bypassing around dams to restore downstream sediment supply, placement of sediment traps or ponds to concentrate sediment before disposal, and stabilization of banks to reduce erosion. In some cases, upstream land management and hydrological alterations are used to reduce sediment supply.

Environmental considerations include water quality, turbidity, habitat disruption, and the potential release of contaminants trapped in sediments. Economic and social aspects involve cost, downtime for navigation, and land-use trade-offs. Effective sedimentoodvoering relies on coordinated governance among water authorities, landowners, and stakeholders, with adaptive management to respond to changing climate, land use, and hydrology.
