SectRNAsupSec

SectRNAsupSec is a framework and open standard for secure handling of RNA sequencing data in research and clinical workflows. It specifies a layered approach to protect confidentiality, ensure data integrity, and maintain traceable provenance from experimental input to downstream analyses.

Its architecture comprises an encryption layer, a secure computation engine, privacy-preserving analytics, access control and auditing, and interoperability adapters with common file formats such as FASTQ, BAM, and expression matrices.

Key features include end-to-end encryption for data at rest and in transit, support for secure enclaves or homomorphic encryption for compute, differential privacy options for aggregated results, robust consent management, and an auditable provenance trail.

Applications include clinical genomics, multi-institutional studies, and cloud-based pipelines where data sharing is required but access must be restricted. The standard promotes interoperability through reference implementations and conformance tests.

Limitations include performance overhead, complexity of set-up, and the need for careful policy configuration to avoid data leakage. As an evolving proposal, it relies on community governance and ongoing security evaluations.
