ScreeningEffekte, or screening effects, describe the reduction or modification of the effective interactions between charged particles caused by the response of other charges or a polarizable medium to an external perturbation. They are a central concept in electrostatics, plasmas, and solid-state physics, and they influence how charges interact in many-body systems.

In plasmas and metals, mobile charges rearrange to oppose external fields, producing Debye screening in classical plasmas and Thomas-Fermi screening in metals. The resulting interaction is typically described by a screened Coulomb potential that decays more rapidly than the bare 1/r potential, with a characteristic length scale called the screening length. In dielectric materials, polarization reduces the internal field, and the interaction is further described by a frequency- and wavevector-dependent dielectric function ε(q, ω).

Screening has several consequences. It weakens long-range Coulomb forces, alters binding energies of impurities and excitons, and changes carrier scattering and screening of electron–hole interactions. In semiconductors and metals, these effects influence electronic structure, optical properties, and transport. In astrophysical and laboratory plasmas, screening modifies reaction rates and plasmonic behavior, respectively.

Quantitative descriptions of screening employ models such as Debye-Hückel theory, Thomas-Fermi theory, and the random-phase approximation, often expressed through a screening length and a complex dielectric function. Experimental manifestations appear in spectroscopic measurements, conductivity, refractive and plasmon dispersion data, and in observations of screening-related shifts in energy levels.
