Schwerbehinderung

Schwerbehinderung is a term used in Germany to denote a severe disability. It is a legal status recognized by the state, granting individuals with significant health impairments certain rights and protections. The degree of disability is assessed by the responsible public authority, typically the State Office for Social Affairs (Landesamt für Soziales), based on medical reports and evidence.

A person is considered to have a Schwerbehinderung if they have a "Grad der Behinderung" (GdB) of at least 50. The GdB is expressed in points, ranging from 10 to 100, with higher numbers indicating a more severe disability. The assessment considers various physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual impairments and their impact on a person's daily life and ability to participate in society.

Individuals with Schwerbehinderung are entitled to various benefits and protections. These can include special leave entitlements for work, increased paid vacation days, protection against dismissal from employment, and priority in certain public housing applications. They may also be eligible for financial assistance, tax benefits, and aids for mobility and daily living. Furthermore, employers in Germany have legal obligations regarding the employment of people with severe disabilities, including quotas for hiring.

The recognition of Schwerbehinderung aims to promote equal opportunities and social participation for people with disabilities, helping them to overcome barriers and live as independently as possible. The process for obtaining this status involves an application, medical evaluations, and a formal decision from the authorities.
