Schweinfurthii

Schweinfurthii is a binomial epithet that commonly refers to a species of African bird, the Green-tailed Bronze-cuckoo. The scientific name for this species is Chrysococcyx chlorostictus, and it is found in the rainforests of Central and West Africa. It is a small, iridescent cuckoo, characterized by its green tail and bronze-green plumage. This species is known for its brood parasitic behavior, laying its eggs in the nests of other bird species.

The epithet "schweinfurthii" is also used in the scientific name of a species of palm tree, Elaeis guineensis var. schweinfurthii, though this is a varietal name and not a full species designation. This variety of the African oil palm is sometimes distinguished for specific characteristics, although it is largely similar to the nominate form. The original use of "schweinfurthii" honors the German explorer and botanist Georg August Schweinfurth, who extensively studied the flora and fauna of Africa in the 19th century. His expeditions provided significant contributions to the scientific understanding of African biodiversity. While the bird is the more commonly recognized entity associated with this epithet, its application to botanical specimens also acknowledges Schweinfurth's considerable fieldwork.
