Schwabentor

Schwabentor, also known as the Swabian Gate, is a medieval city gate in Freiburg im Breisgau, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is part of Freiburg’s historic fortifications and, together with Martinstor, is one of the city’s two remaining gates from the medieval wall.

Construction and history

The gate dates to the early 13th century, developed as Freiburg’s fortifications expanded to secure the eastern approach to the town. Over the centuries Schwabentor served as an active gate and a symbol of the city’s defenses. Like many medieval structures, it underwent alterations and restorations in later periods, with significant conservation work carried out in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to preserve its historical character.
