Schutzatmosphären

Schutzatmosphären, often translated as protective atmospheres or shielding gases, are inert or semi-inert gaseous environments used in various industrial processes to prevent undesirable chemical reactions. The primary purpose is to exclude reactive gases, most notably oxygen, from the processing area. This prevents oxidation, combustion, and other forms of degradation that can compromise the quality, integrity, or safety of the materials or products being treated.

These atmospheres are commonly employed in welding and soldering, where they protect the molten metal from atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen, preventing porosity and improving weld strength. In the food industry, modified atmospheres (MAP) use a precise mix of gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and sometimes oxygen to extend the shelf life of packaged foods by inhibiting spoilage and microbial growth. Other applications include heat treatment of metals, where specific atmospheres prevent scaling and decarburization, and in the pharmaceutical industry for packaging sensitive compounds.

The specific composition of a Schutzatmosphäre is crucial and depends entirely on the application. Common gases used include nitrogen, argon, helium, and carbon dioxide. For some specialized applications, reducing gases like hydrogen may be employed, though their reactivity requires careful control. The implementation of a Schutzatmosphäre typically involves enclosing the process or product in a chamber or using a gas flow system to displace ambient air.
