Schumer

Charles Ellis "Chuck" Schumer (born November 23, 1950) is an American politician who has served as the senior United States Senator from New York since 1999. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been the Senate Majority Leader since 2021 and previously served as Senate Democratic Leader from 2017 to 2021, leading the party during its minority status and its transition to the majority after the 2020 elections.

Schumer was born in Brooklyn, New York, and earned a BA from Brooklyn College in 1971 and a JD from Harvard Law School in 1974. He began his political career in the New York State Assembly (1975-1980) and later was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York's 9th congressional district from 1981 to 1999.

Schumer was elected to the Senate in 1998 and has since been involved in a broad range of legislative issues, including economic policy, healthcare, immigration, and national security. As Senate Majority Leader, he sets the Senate's legislative agenda, coordinates with the White House and the House of Representatives, and oversees the confirmation process for federal appointments and judges. He has also championed budgetary and reconciliation tools to advance major policy packages and has played a central role in responding to national crises and shaping federal legislation affecting New York and the country.
