Schroeckingerite

Schroeckingerite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral with the chemical formula NaCa3(UO2)(CO3)3(OH)·11H2O. It belongs to the uranyl carbonate group of minerals and is known for its vibrant yellow to greenish-yellow color. The mineral was first described in 1937 and is named after Austrian mineralogist and geologist Carl Schroeckinger.

Schroeckingerite typically forms in arid or semi-arid environments, often associated with uranium deposits. It is commonly found in evaporite deposits and sedimentary rocks. Its formation requires the presence of uranium, calcium, sodium, and carbonate ions, along with water. It is often found as small, tabular or prismatic crystals, or as powdery crusts.

Notable occurrences of schroeckingerite include the La Sal mine in San Juan County, Utah, USA, and deposits in the Czech Republic. Due to its radioactivity, stemming from the uranium content, schroeckingerite is handled with appropriate precautions. It is a secondary mineral, meaning it forms from the alteration of pre-existing minerals. Its rarity and association with uranium make it of interest to mineral collectors and geologists studying uranium mineralization.
