School breaks are planned intervals during an academic year when instructional activities are paused. They are scheduled by school districts, national education authorities, or individual schools and vary widely by jurisdiction, calendar year, and level of education.

Common types include summer break, the longest period typically lasting two to three months; winter break, often two weeks around Christmas and New Year; spring break, usually one to two weeks in March or April; and, in some systems, autumn or fall breaks. Some districts also have mid-term or half-term breaks.

The purposes of breaks include rest and recovery for students and staff, time for family travel, and opportunities for teachers to plan, assess, and align the curriculum. Breaks can influence learning, with concerns about summer learning loss, prompting some districts to offer enrichment or summer school programs.

Regional variations are large. North American schools tend to have a long summer break, while many European systems distribute shorter breaks across the year. In some countries, religious or cultural holidays shape the calendar, resulting in nonuniform schedules across regions and schools.

Logistical considerations include calendar alignment with public holidays, budget cycles, and transportation. In centrally managed systems, calendars are standardized; in others, districts or schools retain discretion, producing differences within a country.
