In practice, Schmierfähigkeit is a consideration for components such as bearings, gears, piston rings, valve stems, and other sliding contacts. Materials and surface treatments that promote Schmierfähigkeit include appropriate surface roughness, cleanliness, chemical compatibility with the chosen lubricant, and coatings or alloys that improve film formation and retention. Common approaches involve selecting suitable lubricants (oil or grease), ensuring proper viscosity, and applying surface coatings such as hard coatings, ceramic layers, or diamond-like carbon to enhance lift-off and reduce adhesive wear.
