Schildknorpels

Schildknorpels, commonly known as the thyroid cartilage, is a significant anatomical structure in the human neck. It is the largest of the nine cartilages that make up the larynx, often referred to as the voice box. The thyroid cartilage is a shield-shaped structure, hence its name, composed of hyaline cartilage. It is situated in the anterior part of the neck, anterior to the esophagus.

The primary function of the thyroid cartilage is to protect the larynx and its contents, particularly the vocal cords. It forms a prominent projection in the neck, more noticeable in males, which is commonly called the Adam's apple. This projection is due to the anterior angle of the thyroid cartilage. This cartilage is also a crucial attachment point for various muscles and ligaments that are essential for voice production and swallowing. It plays a vital role in the mechanism of phonation by anchoring the vocal folds and allowing for their tension and relaxation, which in turn alters pitch. Its protective shield-like nature safeguards the delicate vocal apparatus from external trauma.
