Schetsontwerp

Schetsontwerp is a phase in the architectural design process in the Netherlands and Flanders where the primary concept and spatial layout of a project are developed. During this stage the architect translates the program of requirements (PvE) into a coherent spatial idea, focusing on massing, functional relationships, orientation, and the overall character of the project. The schetsontwerp is intended to establish the project's envelope and main design choices without detailing technical solutions. It serves as a basis for client approval and as input for the next design stage.

The activities typically include exploring several design variants, creating schematic drawings and models, and evaluating how the concept meets the program, budget, site constraints, and regulations. Deliverables usually comprise a site plan, rough floor plans, elevations or exterior views, a simple three-dimensional massing model or renders, and an early rough cost estimate. The schetsontwerp is often accompanied by a short design narrative describing the concept and key decisions.

The process is iterative and collaborative, involving the client, consultants, and, if required, stakeholders and authorities. After approval of the schetsontwerp, the project proceeds to the ontwerpfase or definitief ontwerp, where details and specifications are developed and refined, followed by issuance for construction.
