Schattende

Schattende is a participial form found in Dutch and German linguistic contexts, derived from the verb schatten in Dutch or schätzen in German. In Dutch, schatten means to estimate, to value, or to assess. As a present participle, schattende can function as an adjectival or adverbial modifier describing an ongoing act of estimation, or it appears in compound or literary phrases. In standard modern Dutch, the more common participle form is schattend, with schattende appearing mainly in older texts or in fixed expressions.

In German, schattende is the present-participle form related to schatten, meaning to shade or to cast shade. It can occur as an attributive adjective (for example, in phrases describing shading) or in predicative constructions, though in contemporary German the form schattend is more typical and schattende is mostly found in historical or technical writing.

Etymology: Both verbs belong to the Germanic language family and share a related semantic field—one referring to estimation/value in Dutch, the other to shading in German. Because the two languages have developed separately, the sense of schattende diverges accordingly in each language.

The form schattende is relatively uncommon outside specialized texts and dictionaries.
