Scadere

Scadere is an Italian verb that conveys the idea of an end, expiration, or decline tied to a fixed period. It is used for deadlines, licenses, warranties, subscriptions, and other time limits: for example, “La data di scadenza è domani” (the expiration date is tomorrow) or “il contratto scade tra due mesi.” It can also describe food or drink that has become unsafe after a period: “il latte è scaduto.” A further sense is that time itself comes to an end: “la settimana scade giovedì.”

Grammatically, scadere is an intransitive verb and uses the auxiliary essere in compound tenses (sono scaduto, sei scaduto, è scaduto, etc.). It generally does not take a direct object. Typical usages include: “La carta è scaduta” (the card has expired) and “il biglietto scade domani” (the ticket expires tomorrow). The verb belongs to the regular first conjugation and follows standard -are verb paradigms in its simple tenses.
