Saylesville

Saylesville is an unincorporated community located in the eastern part of Richland County in the state of Illinois, United States. The settlement lies approximately 12 miles west of the county seat, Linden, and sits along the Illinois River floodplain at an elevation of about 650 feet. Because it is unincorporated, Saylesville is governed directly by county officials and does not have a municipal government of its own. The community is part of the Central Time Zone and uses ZIP code 62369, which it shares with the surrounding rural area.

The first settlers in the Sayles family, for whom the town is named, established a homestead in the late 19th century. The name "Sayles" came into common usage after a local post office, opened in 1903 and closed in 1953, was named to honor an early postmaster, Thomas H. Sayles. During its early years the town served as a minor shipping point for grain and timber that were transported down the Iroquois River by rail. A small cluster of homes, a church, and a one-room schoolhouse comprised the core of the settlement in the early 1900s. The railroad was abandoned in the 1960s, which led to a decline in local commerce and a gradual shift toward agricultural use of the surrounding land.

Today, Saylesville remains a predominantly residential community with a population of fewer than 200 residents. Most inhabitants are engaged in farming, with the most common crops being corn and soybeans. There are no incorporated businesses or commercial services within the immediate vicinity; residents rely on neighboring towns for groceries, medical care, and schooling. The local landscape is characterized by tallgrass prairies and occasional oak savannas, which are maintained as part of a regional conservation effort aimed at preserving native wetlands and reducing flood risk on the Illinois River.
