Sayanam

Sayanam is a Hindu ritual observed by some Vaishnava traditions, particularly within the Sri Vaishnava sampradaya. It refers to the practice of meditating upon or contemplating the divine form of Lord Vishnu, often in his resting or reclining posture, known as Ananta Sayanam or Vishnupada Sayanam. This posture symbolizes the cosmic sleep of Vishnu, from which the entire universe originates and into which it is eventually reabsorbed.

The practice of Sayanam involves deep introspection and devotional focus. Devotees may visualize the divine form of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Adishesha, with his consort Lakshmi attending to him. This meditation is believed to foster a sense of peace, spiritual connection, and understanding of Vishnu's role as the preserver and sustainer of the cosmos. It is considered a form of dhyana, or meditation, aimed at achieving closeness with the divine. The ritual can be performed individually or as part of congregational worship. While not universally practiced across all Hindu denominations, it holds significant importance for adherents who follow the specific theological interpretations that emphasize this form of devotional contemplation.
